Xcellence

Layout Design for Wales’ first black magazine.

The Project Brief

We were approached by the Xcellence Editors to provide a design that could accommodate monthly content and be managed by the founder and the team at the Xcellence magazine.

Yellow Sub Creative was tasked with creating that would be an appropriate fit for the first black magazine in Wales, highlighting black excellence. The brief stated it should be an elegant, lounge coffee table look, packed with great content highlighting the entrepreneurial successes of black people in Wales and beyond.

The Yellow Sub Approach

The biggest challenge of this project was to curate a high volume of content that required grouping into cohesive stories whilst keeping it stylish and high-end for the reader.  We were seeking a highly editorial feel with a casual blend of news and lifestyle content.

We did extensive research on magazine covers & styles and considered the content carefully in order to create a design style for the magazine.

I’ve asked Yellow Sub to design the magazine in a way I could use the pages as templates going forward. And they did just that. Love the designs, very easy to follow.

Project Outcome

The magazine was celebrated all around Cardiff, on billboards and local news.  The magazine had 2000 printed copies and was distributed all around Wales.
